This workshop is a concurrent session of the 2007 Faculty Summer Institute. U of I faculty may attend this session without attending the conference as a registered participant. Faculty teaching for Summer Sessions I & II as well as Fall 2007 are encouraged to receive training prior to teaching with the NEW Illinois Compass. This workshop provides the foundation for “Let Your Fingers Do the Walking: Communicating with Students Using Illinois Compass” and “Making the Grade: Assessing Student Performance Using Illinois Compass” – other workshops faculty may attend without being registered attendees of FSI. Workshop registration is required.

Topics Covered:
  • Getting started with the NEW Illinois Compass powered by Blackboard Enterprise Vista 4 Learning System
  • Creating a new course and selecting tools
  • Creating a syllabus and using the goals feature
  • Uploading and managing lecture notes and other multimedia content
  • Selectively releasing course materials
  • Adding assignments & grading them
  • Making calendar entries
  • Administering assessments
  • Communicating with students using announcements, mail, discussion, and chat.
  • Tracking student usage
  • Managing the grade book.

    This session will be taught by Heidi Jung and J.P. Dunn of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. They are Faculty Summer Institute speakers.
